Let me first clarify that I am in no way making light of anyone who is caught up in corporate downsizing. There is nothing fun about losing one’s job unexpectedly. However, for those who are already job hunting; downsizing is often an unturned stone where great opportunities blossom.
Downsizing has become a common issue and almost routine in the course of daily business. What few people realize is that downsizing actually can and will generate job openings. When a company decides to layoff employees there is always a shockwave which spreads through the organization especially with the frequency we are experiencing or seeing downsizing. People in the job market today already have a concern about job security. When their company begins to downsize, the remaining employees quickly feel that they may be next. This ultimately results in the company losing even more employees as paranoid people seek stable ground. The company ends up with too few employees to perform the basic needs of the business for it to service.
Jobseekers should stay in tune daily with businesses that are downsizing. When they see this activity, they should add that company to there job search. I would not suggest sending a resume the day after hearing about layoffs. Rather, begin researching the company, identify hiring managers at the corporation (in addition to human resources) and seek help from anyone in your network who may have connections to this business. After completing your due diligence over a few weeks, execute your personal marketing efforts with the contacts you have identified. Getting to the actual hiring manager will also make a difference as they will feel the most pressure losing additional people on their team.
Jobseekers need to be evermore creative in their search activities. By identifying and researching companies in their field who are downsizing, the individual may identify their dream job especially if the company makes the turn back to profitability…and many do.
